By now you've probably heard that Djarum blacks have been "banned" since mid 2009, along with all other flavored cigarettes. Djarum Blacks are one of the most popular types of kreteks (Indonesian cigarettes) in the world. Composed of a mixture of clove (40%) and tobacco (60%), the Djarum Blacks also has a filter soaked in a "spice sauce," giving it a distinct and sweet flavor kick with hints of cinnamon, cardamon and clove.
Djarum Black is a sub brand of the Indonesian clove cigarette manufacturer, Djarum, which was founded in 1951 by Oei Wie Gwan. Gwan was a Chinese businessman whom acquired the original, ailing Djarum company, turning it around from the brink of insolvency. His efforts proved successful right up to his death and ultimate succession by his sons in 1963. By 1970 Djarum was experimenting with new blends of Kretek and in 1972 they started exporting. By 1980 Djarum had developed its first machine-made kretek which became its most popular brand, the Djarum Super.
